Manchester United defender tips Anthony Elanga for a “great future” after impressing vs Aston Villa

Anthony Elanga has been praised by Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof, as the Sweden captain tips a “great future” for the 19-year-old.

Despite the Reds dropping two points at Villa Park on Saturday evening, Elanga’s performance was a major talking point after the game, with the winger giving Aston Villa’s backline a host of problems.

Speaking after full-time, Ralf Rangnick told Sky Sports that Elanga proved why he played from the start: “He showed what I expected him to show and why I played him from the start.”

The German manager has openly applauded Elanga’s work in training, and Lindelof, who also started against Steven Gerrard’s men, has predicted a bright career for his young teammate, who he could soon share the pitch with on the international stage too.

“Of course, I talk to him a lot,” Lindelof told United’s club website. “He’s a great talent and I’m very happy for him, getting more and more minutes at the club.

“He’s a young player, a good talent, who comes in here every day and really wants to improve his game. He works very, very hard and I’m pleased for him.

“If he keeps doing the things he’s doing at the moment, I think he’s going to have a great future ahead of him. It’s all about staying humble and to keep working hard.”

Many supporters were impressed by Elanga’s showing in Birmingham, and want him to keep his spot in the starting line-up ahead of United’s trip to Brentford on Wednesday evening.

With seven goals in eight appearances for Sweden’s Under-21s, Janne Andersson will certainly be keeping an eye on Elanga if he continues to impress Rangnick at United.

“Maybe, in the future, we’ll see,” Lindelof explained about Elanga’s chances of an international call-up “We have quite a lot of young, exciting players coming up in Sweden at the moment. It’s a very, very positive thing obviously for me, being captain, as it’s always nice to see that – having young players getting into the team.

“To be honest, I don’t read that much [of any press coverage in Sweden about Elanga]. Obviously, if you’re at United and young and Swedish, of course there is a lot of talk about you as a player. Yeah, I think, like I said, he’s a top talent who, if he keeps doing the things he’s doing at the moment, he can have a bright future ahead of him. It’s nice to have him at the club as well and I’m trying to help him in any way I can.”

Elanga has made eight appearances for Manchester United, with his debut being against Leicester City last season in the Premier League.
