Manchester United have finally completed the signing of Raphaël Varane from Real Madrid for a fee of £34m plus add-ons. The 28-year-old has committed to a four-year contract with the option of an extra year after completing his medical. After completing the £73 million signing of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, the 28-year-old is set to be the third signing by United this summer.
The club said in a statement: “Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of Raphael Varane, keeping him at the club until June 2025.“
Varane has served ten years at Real Madrid, conquering La Liga three times and the Champions League four times, but he had suggested that he will not renew his contract upon heading into the final year of his contract this summer.Embed from Getty Images
Before joining Madrid from Lens in 2011, United had shown interest in the defender, who has since made 360 appearances in all competitions in Spain.
Varane joins the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones as centre-back alternatives for Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
Varane is excited to be a Red
Upon signing for Manchester United, Varane said: “Manchester United is one of the most iconic clubs in world football and the chance to come here and play in the Premier League is something I couldn’t turn down.Embed from Getty Images
“There is a lot more that I want to achieve in my career and I know I’m joining a squad full of great players who will all have the same determination to win matches and trophies. Having spoken to the manager I can see how much progress has been made over the last few seasons and I now join a group ready to play at the highest level.“
Two key signings, will there be another?
It is the first time in a few years that the Red Devils have made two very important signings at such a quick pace. On July 23, United announced the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, addressing the club’s long-standing right-wing crisis.
Since completing the signing of Sancho, United had been negotiating a deal for Raphaël Varane. After agreeing the deal on principle with Real Madrid on July 27, United have now officially announced him after the centre-back needed to quarantine after travelling to Manchester.
With reports saying that United’s pursuit of Kieran Trippier is all but over, and that Diogo Dalot will be providing competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back, there is an expectation among supporters that the club are able to bring in a central midfielder as a fourth and final signing in the summer transfer window.
