Manchester United have agreed a £73million pound deal with Borussia Dortmund in principle to sign their first and most coveted player of the summer transfer window. Jadon Sancho.
United finally announced the imminent arrival of the 21-year old this afternoon, with Sancho set to complete his medical and further tests after England’s completion of the European Championships.
Sancho’s career timeline saw him start out at Watford F.C’s academy before moving to Manchester City, aged 15. After spending two years at the blue side of Manchester, Sancho moved to Dortmund at 18 for £7.5 million. Four years later, Sancho returns home.
The 21-year old becomes the eighth ever player to have donned the blue and red colours of Manchester. After failing to break into the City first team, Sancho will be looking to knock City off their perch in years to come as United plan to win a league title for the first time in eight years.Embed from Getty Images
United are reportedly set to hand Sancho the number seven shirt. The 21-year old was meant to wear the famous jersey number last summer had he arrived. But finally Sancho is all but set to wear the seven shirt this time round, as per the Evening Standard.
Four highly productive years in Germany has seen the Englishman provide 114 goal contributions in 137 games. Sancho departs Germany with some silverware as Dortmund lifted the DFB Pokal after a 4-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig.
Sancho’s late winner at Gladbach in the last eight stages of the DFB Pokal saw him provide two assists in the semi-final against Holstein Kiel before two goals and an assist in a star-studded display saw the Englishman lift his first-ever trophy at the Olympiastadion. The man for the big occasion it seems.
Excellent performances in the Champions League now also see Sancho playing under the Old Trafford lights with United participating in next season’s competition. Sancho’s display against Sevilla in the Round of 16 first leg saw him produce the goods as Dortmund reached the quarter-final stage of the Champions League last season. Dortmund fell short to Man City – with Sancho unfortunately injured for both legs.
The versatility of Sancho to play on the right and left flanks have seen him perform almost equally as good on each side for Dortmund when called upon. Having contributed to 17 goal contributions in 15 games for Dortmund on the right flank, the 21-year old managed to produce similar numbers on the opposite side having supplied 14 goals and assists in 14 games.
United’s troubles in finding a top-class right-winger over the years have now has seen them attain a world-class winger in Sancho. Regarded as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players, the 21-year old’s heavy creative output now hands United a different outlet having not had a silky creative winger similar to Sancho in recent campaigns.Embed from Getty Images
Ole Gunnar Solskjær finally lands the man he failed to bring in last summer. With the transfer all but set to go through last summer, United failed to meet Dortmund’s asking price of £108 million after agreeing on personal terms with Sancho months prior.
12 months later, United have now agreed on a 73million pound deal – a 35 million pound discount from Dortmund’s triple-digit fee demands. United business in the summer window does not stop with Sancho, as Solskjaer turns his attention to Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane. The year-long wait for Sancho could have financially helped them in acquiring the decorated central defender.
